Original painting.
The church of St. Simon and St. Jude was built by voluntary subscription under the direction of the Manchester and Eccles Church Building Society.
The foundation stone was laid on 28 October 1841 and it was consecrated on 28 June 1842.
It was assigned a District by Bishop's Instrument, 30 May 1844, and by Order in Council, 24 June 1856 (London Gazette, 1 July 1856).
It closed in August 1906 and the parish was united with that of St. James, George St., as the parish of St. James, by the Manchester Churches Act, 20 July 1906.
In 1928 St. James's became part of the the parish of St. Ann and St. Mary.
In 1927 Lowry's father said, 'You'll really have to go and see St Simon’s Church, it's your cup of tea and it's going to come down very soon.'
The church was demolished only a few months after Lowry made his first drawing of it on site. He later worked this sketch up into a finished drawing before embarking on the oil painting.
Many of Lowry's drawings are simple reminders of things he observed and do not always result in a finished paintings of the same subject.
