Lowry would often travel to the coast, usually in the north-east and stay at The Seaburn hotel in Sunderland.
He loved to be by the sea and it gave him some relief from seeing the hard working lives of men and women going to and fro to the mills, where they could work upto 18 hours a day.
When was the Seaburn hotel built?
The Seaburn Hotel was built in an amazing 10 weeks in 1937. It was for many years the premiere hotel in Sunderland.
Ferry boats shows many figures going hurriedly bout their business, presumably catching a steam boat, or meeting some new arrivals.
