Painted in 1937 when Lowry was caring for his seriously ill mother, this depicts his desolate mood in a bleak image of the flooded River Irwell,
running through Salford, dominated by rows of chimmneys and the relentless energy of industry.
A tamer Irwell now runs through the city, its banks overgrown and most of its mills demolished.
The red brick building still standing, once the old Salford hospital, has been converted into apartments priced between £200,000 and £400,000.
