Original Drawing
St. Stephen's church was one of many churches in and around Manchester.
Lowry appeared to find a certain fascination in these buildings with their large black spires across the landscape,
thet were interspersed with the tall black chimmneys where much of the population worked very long arduous hours.
Life was very hard for much of the population around Manchester at this time, and Lowry experienced this first hand as he went from door to door collecting rents.
